Cat Scratchers & Cat Trees: The Complete Buyer’s Guide

June 22, 2026 · 5 min read · PetSup Team

Scratching isn’t bad behaviour — it’s how cats stretch, mark territory and shed nail sheaths. Give them the right surface and your furniture survives. Here’s how to choose scratchers and trees your cat will actually use.

Vertical vs horizontal scratchers

Watch where your cat already scratches. If they stretch up the couch arm, they want a tall vertical post (at least as tall as your cat fully stretched — usually 60–80 cm). If they claw the rug, a horizontal or angled scratcher wins.

Many cats like both, so a tree with posts plus a flat cardboard lounge covers all bases.

Materials matter

Sisal rope or fabric is the gold standard — durable and satisfying to shred. Corrugated cardboard is cheap, recyclable and beloved by most cats (just replace it when it’s flattened). Carpet-covered posts can confuse cats into thinking carpet is fair game, so use them sparingly.

Choosing a cat tree

Stability is everything — a wobbly tree gets ignored. Look for a wide base and solid posts. Multi-level trees suit climbers and multi-cat homes; older cats appreciate low perches and ramps.

Place it near a window or a favourite napping spot, not hidden in a basement — cats use what’s in their path.

Set it up for success

New scratcher ignored? Rub a little catnip on it or place it right next to the furniture they’ve been targeting, then slowly move it. Reward use early.
